Neuroses and Character Disorders – Who’s Responsible?

The neurotic assumes to much responsibility; the person with a character disorder not enough. The neurotic assumes the world is at fault; the character disorder says something must be wrong with me.  The problem of distinguishing what we are and what we are not responsible for in this life is one of the greatest problems of human existence. We must possess the willingness and the capacity to suffer continual self examination.
I am not sure where Peck is going with this but it reminds me of the Serenity Prayer, ” God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”  It is such a simple prayer but it helps us to filter whether the problem is something we can do something about or not. It helps us to shoulder the responsibility  when we can and accept when we can’t.  How do you take responsibility?
