Transference : The Outdated Map
Today we are looking at Transference being that set way of perceiving and responding to the world which is developed in childhood and which is usually entirely appropriate to the childhood environment but which is inappropriately transferred into the adult environment. Truth or reality is avoided when it is painful. We can revise our maps only when we have the discipline to overcome that pain. To have such discipline, we must be totally dedicated to truth. Mental Health is an ongoing process for dedication to reality at all cost.
When we are children we respond to how we are raised in such ways we protect ourselves from that hard and the hurt. As adults we tent to still react in the same way we did as a kid. That often doesn’t work. Peck is telling us that our maps have to change. As we look at the truth we don’t have to respond as we did as kids. We have to change our maps. God’s Word is full of God’s truth, maybe not as we have learned it as a kid but now as an adult, putting away the childish things. The Bible is packed full of truth that is relevant today. I am grateful that we can still be learning. Linda’s favorite verse is from John 8:32, “Come walk the path of truth and find freedom.”. Truth does lead to freedom.
