Love as you love a Pet…
In The Roadless Traveled, Peck talks of the love of a parent new born baby or the love of someone that “loves” a pet. This type of love is dependent on something that can’t really respond back. A pet has no thought, they like us unconditionally. A baby is similar until they reached around the “terrible twos” where they are exhibiting their Independence. It is rightfully when we love unconditionally whether they deserve it or not. Peck says….Love is not simply giving: it is judicious giving and judicious withholding as well. It is judicious praising and judicious criticizing. It is judicious arguing, struggling, confronting, urging, pushing and pulling in addition to comforting. It is leadership. (page 111)
Interesting. I think he is introducing us to loving things that really can’t love us back. Like loving golf or reading. It is something we enjoy.
